Barcelona Cable Landing Station will have a direct extension to BitNAP, a neutral data center that allows connection to the main operators

  • As a neutral data center, bitNAP does not depend on any single provider and allows access to a wide range of operators to select the appropriate connectivity.
  • Operators connected to bitNAP will have direct connectivity to Barcelona Cable Landing Station (CLS), the submarine fiber optic landing station, which is scheduled to begin operations in the first quarter of 2022.
  • This agreement with BitNAP is in addition to other agreements that Barcelona CLS has established with local data centers to strengthen Barcelona’s fiber optic ring.

Barcelona, March 30th, 2021. Barcelona Cable Landing Station (CLS), the future international station for submarine fiber-optic cables promoted by AFR-IX Telecom, has signed an agreement with BitNAP, a neutral data center located in Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona) that has 210 racks and offers service to 386 clients. BitNAP is a reference in the sector for its operation, data center management and sustainability.

Barcelona CLS connects to BitNAP

Customers connected to bitNAP will have direct connectivity with Barcelona Cable Landing Station partners. Manel Berencia, CEO of bitNAP, valued the agreement: “It is very valuable for us to be able to offer to our clients the connection to submarine fiber-optic cable systems, since they guarantee a high connectivity due to their efficiency in aspects such as latency”.

The agreement with bitNAP strengthens the infrastructure and network of metropolitan connections and involves a further incorporation of data centers connected to the submarine landing station. The Barcelona fiber-optic ring will potentially improve the local economy and businesses located here by providing a direct connection from the Barcelona CLS to where Data Centers are located. In this way, Barcelona CLS continues to lay the solid foundations for the landing station that will be operational during the first quarter of 2022:

The works at the beach to receive the first cables have already been completed and the next phases of the works for the construction of the building and the underground cable laying are progressing at a good pace. However, setting up a submarine fiber-optic cable landing station with guaranteed service success from day one also requires establishing logistics with data centers as far in advance as possible, since we work as a tandem“, says Miguel Angel Acero, CTO of AFR-IX Telecom and Barcelona Cable Landing Station, who also points out as a positive fact and the neutral behavior of BitNAP.

Neutrality to guarantee a better service

As a neutral data center, bitNAP does not depend on any single provider and allows access to a wide range of operators to select the appropriate connectivity. It is even possible to use several carriers or establish redundancies to ensure service robustness.

This neutral philosophy is also in line with the character of Barcelona CLS, which is also defined as a neutral open digital port, allowing the arrival of cables without restrictions. In this way, a single landing station will be the arrival point for multiple cables, optimizing resources and avoiding the proliferation of buildings.

Barcelona Cable Landing Station is the first landing station built in Catalonia with an international connectivity dimension. The landing station will make Catalonia the gateway and link for high-capacity submarine fiber optic-cables from Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean that want to connect to the U.S. by the fastest route.
