EdgeConneX connects its Data Centre in Sant Boi del Llobregat to AFR-IX Telecom’s Barcelona Cable Landing Station

The EdgeConneX data center in Barcelona will have greater access to international routes via the Barcelona Cable Landing Station

Barcelona, 21 February 2023 – EdgeConneX, an international reference organization with more than 50 data centres in more than 30 markets in Europe and America, will connect its data centre located in Sant Boi de Llobregat (Barcelona) to the Barcelona Cable Landing Station (Barcelona CLS), an infrastructure that is becoming a neuralgic point of connection between Barcelona and the world.

The EdgeConneX facility in Sant Boi de Llobregat (Spain) offers local and international carrier routes, so the connection with Barcelona CLS, owned by AFR-IX telecom, which came into operation last October, is a strategic expansion.

“The planned Barcelona CLS connection will enable EdgeConneX customers to access new international routes through the submarine cables hosted at Barcelona CLS. The Barcelona CLS will expand activity as an interconnection point and improve AFR-IX telecom and the Barcelona CLS positioning as an international entry and exit point for operators, service providers, cloud and content providers as well as for businesses in the region. We’re honored to be a part of this critical service”

Bart Verdouw, Senior Director Solutions Architecture EMEA at EdgeConneX

The great mutual benefit is that it will simplify the procedures for customers who want to connect between Barcelona CLS and EdgeConneX, so that they can do it in a fast and agile way, avoiding multiple procedures and delays.

Strengthening the data centre network in the metropolitan area of Barcelona

The EdgeConneX centre in Sant Boi de Llobregat has 7,600m2 for data rooms and a capacity of 8MW of IT load. The facility offers high-quality, low-latency international connectivity to accelerate content delivery, cloud access and communications services. The connection to Barcelona CLS will strengthen the IT ecosystem of the Barcelona metropolitan area.

“At the moment, there is a great demand from many companies for data centres in the Barcelona metropolitan region to connect to Barcelona CLS. Their aim is to improve their connectivity and access to international routes through submarine cables as these routes offer access to new markets, protection to their existing land routes and very low latency solutions. We are convinced that the connection between EdgeConneX and Barcelona CLS will be beneficial for both companies and an improvement for the digital economy, not only in this region, but also in Southern Europe.”

Romà Andreu, CCO of Barcelona Cable Landing Station

In this sense, it should be noted that the connection with EdgeConneX enables alternative connection routes to the company’s data centres in European cities such as Dublin, Brussels, Amsterdam and Munich.

The agreement between AFR-IX telecom and EdgeConneX is another example of how Barcelona CLS start-up is generating a whole digital ecosystem that will eventually consolidate Barcelona and its metropolitan area as a relevant digital hub in Southern Europe.
